5 Essential Components of Teaching Reading

There are 5 essential components to teach children to read. The 5 essential components are: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
Phonemic awareness is  “the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate the individual sounds in spoken words” (Blevins, 2006). In order to teach students phonemic awareness methods that I will use are oral blending and oral segmentation. I will also model it but stretching out words and segmenting throughout the day.
Phonics awareness is a blanket term that includes phonemic awareness. Phonological awareness includes work with phonemes, rhymes, words, syllables, onsets, and rimes(PRF, 2000). In order to start working with and learning phonological awareness we will use fun and engaging methods like the Starfall website.
Fluency is the ability to use punctuation and other cues to read smoothly and easily, with proper speed, accuracy, and phrasing. Fluency is also linked to comprehension.
Vocabulary is students' knowledge of the meaning of words in their listening, speaking, and reading vocabularies. Enhancing students' vocabulary can happen in several ways, some being: choosing books with tier 2 vocabulary, having a print rich environment, and exposing them to new and challenging words.
Comprehension is meaning gained from what is written on a page or heard. Comprehension can be improved by teaching the students to monitor themselves as they read. Comprehension can also be improved by working on fluency.
